The Administration and Secretariat Function is part of the support to the Chief Officers, with two Executive Support Officers working directly to a specific Chief Officer and five Personal Assistants who provide support to the Chief Officers and Executive Support Team.

The Staff Office and Performance Function is also part of the support to the Chief Officers. This is made up of four Staff Officers, three police officers and one police staff member. The Events Coordinator/Driver also sits within this function and can carry out staff officer duties for resilience.

The Apprentice vacancy is within our Executive Support Department where a team of approximately 12 staff provide support to Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Chief Officers. Your role will be to provide Executive Support Staff and Chief Officers with basic administrative and clerical assistance to enable efficient working. Specifically, some of your tasks will be to:

• Answer telephone and e-mail queries
• Assist sorting and distribution of incoming/outgoing mail
• Assist in the gathering and collation of information connected to internal and external projects being undertaken on behalf of the Chief Constable
• Prepare basic correspondence
• Create and retrieve documents as requested
• Copying, scanning and shredding of documentation as required
• Aiding in the administration of department meetings and associated agendas/minutes
• Update information systems
• Welcome and direct visitors

You will be assisted and supported with this by your line manager but you will have contact every day with staff at all levels within the Constabulary as well as people outside the organisation.

This apprenticeship is for a one year fixed term contract. We are a large organisation and employment opportunities may develop towards the end of your apprenticeship for which you would need to apply through our normal procedures, but there is no guarantee of this. However, we hope that the experience you will be exposed to during your apprenticeship will significantly enhance your ability to find employment inside or outside our organisation.

The successful candidate will be expected to complete an NVQ Level 2 in Business and Administration, including Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths, English and ICT.

We strongly encourage our apprentices to get involved in voluntary work such as Scouts, Cadets, St John's Ambulance or the Princes Trust.

On completion of your NVQ, voluntary sessions, and work with Hertfordshire Constabulary, you can apply for a £500 bonus. Your engagement in voluntary work will form part of our assessment as to whether you have successfully completed your Apprenticeship and whether the bonus will be paid to you. Payment of the bonus is also subject to satisfactory performance and attendance

You may be aware of the recent press coverage around the potential outsourcing of Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire police support services. If the decision to outsource is made it is likely that this post will be included in any transfer to a different employer.

Successful candidates will be subject to security clearance, the receipt of satisfactory references, and being passed medically fit by our Occupational Health and Welfare Unit to undertake the work.

For further information please contact Chief Inspector Ruth Dodsworth on 01707 354525 or Katrina Moss on 01707 354084.
