Police Officers rely on a wide range of people to help them do their job, and you can be one of them.

Vacancies are currently available for Police Community Support Officers across the county, however upon appointment postings will be decided based on operational demand.

Within this role you will be giving vital support to officers of Hertfordshire Constabulary; but more than that you will be helping to reassure the public as you will be providing a uniformed presence within the community.

You must be an effective communicator with excellent interpersonal skills as well as having the ability to solve problems, whilst thinking on your feet. You must also have the desire to make a difference to people's lives. We will work with you to maximise these skills (and others) to the utmost potential so you can work to maintain the highest possible levels of public safety.

If you have the ability work operate effectively within a public facing role, hold a full driving licence and are able to complete a level 3 Certificate in Policing once appointed then we would like to hear from you.

Eligibility to apply

To be eligible to apply for the role of PCSO you must..

• Be aged 18 years old at the point of application.
• Possess a full UK manual driving licence.
• Be a British or EU citizen. Commonwealth citizens who are resident in the UK for at least three years can also apply.
• Be in good health and your BMI must be between 18 and 30.
• Have good fitness levels; you must achieve 5.4 on a bleep test, push 34kg and pull 35kg.
• Tattoos which are offensive, garish, prominent or numerous may not be accepted, therefore please supply photos, descriptions and measurements of any tattoos with your application.
• If you have a criminal record, you’ll need to declare any caution or conviction on your application form.
• If you have any outstanding county court judgments or you are an undischarged bankrupt, then you are automatically ineligible. However, if you’re struggling with debt, you may still be able to apply. You just need to supply us with evidence of your ability to manage your debts successfully.

Overview of the Selection Process

You should complete the on-line application to apply for the role of PCSO, if you are successful following short listing you will then be invited to undertake the Police Initial Recruitment Test (PIRT). You will need to pass this test in order to be invited to the final stage which is a competency based interview.

If successful following these three stages you will have to undergo a number of pre-employment checks including vetting, health-screening medical and references. Successful candidates will also be required to pass a fitness test as they are expected to be on active patrol (on foot or bicycle) for their shift of 8 hours.

Start dates are dependent on a number of factors including all pre-employment checks being completed satisfactorily.

Role Information

Hours of work; The Police Community Support Officer role involves working a rotating shift pattern to cover a 40 hour week, including working some weekends and evenings to 23:00, although it is possible that flexible working patterns could be considered.

Location of Work; If successful following the selection process your actual base location will be confirmed once you start your training with us, however you will be told the area you will work within which will be within one of the below:

Stevenage/North Herts

St Albans/Dacorum

East Herts/Broxbourne

Watford/ Three Rivers

Welwyn Hatfield/ Hertsmere

The role of a PCSO may require you to work from different locations other than your base/home station, this would usually be at neighbouring stations, however due to an exigency of duty there may be a requirement to work at other stations throughout the County.
