The Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit (MCU) is part of the Joint Protective Services Directorate with responsibility for the investigation of Major Crime across the tri-force area. The MCU is based from two hubs: in the south at Hertfordshire Police Headquarters, and in the north at Cambridgeshire Police Headquarters. In addition to investigating homicide, the MCU has responsibility for a wide variety of investigations including attempted murder, manslaughter, stranger rape, crimes in action and child sexual exploitation and abuse.

The MCU is an extremely successful and aspirational department. Since collaboration in April 2012 the Unit has secured 2910 years of custodial sentences.

500 word expressions of interest are invited for a Detective Chief Inspector to join the team. Due to apportionment, priority will be given to Bedfordshire & then Hertfordshire officers. The DCI roles within MCU include responsibility for investigations, reviews and specialist Holmes/intelligence functions. This is a rare and exciting opportunity for individuals with a proven record of investigative and leadership skills.

The successful candidate will be the Senior Investigating Officer for complex major crime investigations across the strategic alliance and will manage a large team of investigators. They will be PIP Level 3 qualified having attended and passed the Senior Investigating Officer’s Development Program (SIODP) and will be Kidnap and Extortion trained to the nationally recognised standard. Additionally, expression of interest are also invited from DCIs with a significant and proven investigative background who have the ability and willingness to complete the SIODP, Kidnap and Extortion training and to gain PIP3 accreditation.

This vacancy is also open to Detective Inspectors who are supported in their application for the forthcoming Chief Inspectors promotion process, who are ready to take on a significant leadership challenge. Please note that those who apply whilst undertaking the Chief Inspectors promotion process, will be automatically removed from this application should they not be successful at any stage of the promotion board process. Should there be selection to include those successful in the promotion board process; these will happen after the promotion board but prior to the Chief Inspector postings meeting to ensure a coordinated and efficient process.

Due to the training costs associated with this role there is a minimum 36 month in post return on investment requirement.

This post can be based at either hub, however the successful applicant will be required to travel and work from bases across the tri-force area and beyond.

The Major Crime Unit endeavour to reflect the diverse communities we serve and to build an inclusive workforce where everyone is valued and respected.  We encourage applications from underrepresented or minority groups.

For further information and an informal discussion please contact MCU head of department D/Supt. Joanne Walker or T/ D Chief Supt Karena Thomas.

All applicants must print off a copy of the BCH application approval form and pass this onto their line manager and head of department for sign off. As this is a PDF document this will need to be wet signed. Though we will accept an audit trail of emails from your line manager and Head of Department if this is not achieveable.

The completed approval form needs to be returned to the BCHCareers@herts.pnn.police.uk as close to the closing date as possible.  Application forms will not be progressed to the shortlisting stage until the Recruitment Team has received a completed approval form.
