The Hi Tech Crime Unit is the Force's dedicated team responsible for the identification and extraction of intelligence and evidence from digital devices. The team is made up of highly skilled staff who may examine a range of devices from mobile phones, to media, small items such as Sat Navs and laptops, up to large PCs and servers. There are immediate and project opportunities in the unit to become a Digital Forensic Examiner. Successful candidates will be working mainly in a busy laboratory at Police HQ in WCG, working with SIOs and investigators to identify critical information held on a device, and then use a range of technical skills to extract that data. Role holders will also accompany Officers on warrants to assess the evidence in situ. The material extracted can be used in evidence, and role holders may have to give evidence at court. Successful candidates will be provided with training to achieve the qualifications needed to undertake the duties of this post, and will be supported with continuous professional development to keep up to date in this fast moving field. Successful applications will have either an existing degree level qualification in computing, or will be able to demonstrate similar level vocational skills. A strong computing aptitude is required. Applicants should also be aware a large proportion of the work of the unit comes from the Paedophile Investigation Unit.
