The Case Investigation Team is responsible for the management of those arrested for volume and low risk offences across the force. Many of those who are arrested for offences have underlying mental health conditions which may have had a direct impact on the individual committing the offence. In some cases, prosecution through the usual Criminal Justice Route is not appropriate or proportionate.

To address this, Hertfordshire operates a Mentally Disordered Offender panel. The panel is chaired by probation and has representatives from the Liaison and Diversion Service, Mental Health services and Drug and alcohol teams along with the CIT Detective Inspector. Officers can refer offenders to this panel for consideration. The panel meets monthly, and each case is reviewed, and information shared to enable the panel to determine if the offender is suitable for diversion away from court or if they should proceed through the Criminal Justice System.

A volunteer is sought to assist with the administration involved in the preparation of the meeting and the updates required at the conclusion. This would suit a person who is organised and able to work on their own initiative. Also, someone who has an interest in the criminal justice process and partnership working.

The volunteer needs to be computer literate on all standard systems and training will be offered on specific policing packages.

The Volunteer Scheme welcomes applications from across the county and reimburses travelling expenses up to 15 miles from the volunteering location.

Everyone at Hertfordshire Constabulary take personal responsibility to help create an inclusive workplace, where police officers and staff respect one another, feel valued for their differences and can be themselves. We are committed to providing reasonable adjustments, wherever needed so everyone feels welcome and can flourish.
