The Citizens in Policing Unit of Bedfordshire Police are inviting applications from undergraduates at UK universities for our Summer Internship 2023. This is a paid internship open to all UK students, regardless of degree subject.

We are seeking highly motivated, enthusiastic individuals who are working toward a university employability award or similar qualification. You should have a personal development plan and a clear idea of your strengths and areas for further development.

We are seeking to appoint students who are:

  • capable of working within a team environment in a disciplined organisation
  • innovative and forward thinking with fresh ideas
  • capable of analytical thinking
  • good oral communication skills
  • comfortable speaking to people, of all ages and ranks.

It does not matter what degree subject you are studying; this opportunity is open to all students who can complete a sandwich placement as part of their degree course.

Location: Your location can be at any appropriate base within Bedfordshire which will include Police HQ or Luton Police Station as required.

Post type: Undergraduate Student, temporary member of police staff on a fixed term contract.

Hours of work: 37 hours per week. Generally, office hours Monday to Friday though there may be the opportunity to work occasional weekends and evenings if that meets the intern’s developmental needs and the needs of the business area to which you are assigned.

The Internship Scheme

Bedfordshire Police is a well-respected, high performing, efficiently run police service working together with others to protect people and keep Bedfordshire safe. A key part of our approach is to seek out new and innovative ways of introducing skills and fresh perspectives into the organisation to feed our culture of continuous improvement. As part of this strategy, we can offer an opportunity to 3 undergraduate students to commence a 12-week summer internship between June 2023 and September 2023.

The successful applicants will be expected to work with their managers to identify areas for personal development based upon our Undergraduate Competency Framework, which they will then address by completing work packages that will support the delivery of the Chief Constable’s strategic plan and the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Policing Plan.

You will receive an induction that will allow you to become familiar with the new working environment following which, you will work with your allocated team completing work packages and gathering evidence towards your employability scheme and degree requirements. You will meet regularly with your line manager and the Citizens in Policing Unit Manager or a member of their team. You will receive formal assessments of your work at scheduled periods during your placement.

The final week will allow you to build your portfolio of evidence, receive your final assessment and showcase the results of your work to senior officers and invited guests.

You will be fully supported throughout by the Citizens in Policing Unit, and you will be appointed a mentor outside of your line management arrangements as appropriate.

Salary: You will be paid at the level of a scale 2 police staff employee, £19,149 per annum pro rata. Payment will be by direct transfer into your bank account on the 27th day of the month.

Accommodation: You are expected to source and secure your own appropriate accommodation that enables you to attend your place of work with Bedfordshire Police. We do NOT provide accommodation or any support towards accommodation costs. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, it is anticipated that student interns will be expected to work from home for some of the placement and attend police estates only as and when required. If you do not live locally or within a reasonable commutable distance and choose not to relocate near Bedfordshire, then you must ensure you are able to attend police premises as and when required. The cost of travel and accommodation will NOT be covered by Bedfordshire Police.

Selection: Selection for shortlisting will be based upon the completion of an application form. Successful shortlisted applicants will be invited to an assessment day (this is likely to be completed via video communication due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic)
