Location Police Headquarters at Kempston, Bedfordshire though there may be opportunities to work elsewhere in the county should that meet the student's needs

Post type Undergraduate Sandwich Student, temporary member of police staff on a fixed term contract.

Hours of work 37 hours per week. Generally office hours Monday to Friday though there may be the opportunity to work occasional weekends and evenings if that meets the intern’s developmental needs.

Bedfordshire Police is a well-respected, high-performing, efficiently run police service working together with others to protect people and keep Bedfordshire safe. A key part of our approach is to seek out new and innovative ways of introducing skills and fresh perspectives into the organisation to feed our culture of continuous improvement. As part of this strategy an exciting opportunity has arisen for five undergraduate student sandwich placements taking place between 3 September 2018 and 28 June 2019.

The successful applicants will be expected to work with their managers to identify areas for personal development based upon our Undergraduate Competency Framework, which they will then address by completing work packages that will support the delivery of the Chief Constable’s strategic plan and the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Policing Plan.

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals working toward a university employability award or similar qualification. You should have a personal development plan and a clear idea of your strengths and areas for further development. We are seeking to appoint students who are capable of working within a team environment in a disciplined organisation. You should be innovative, capable of analytical thinking, the preparation of reports and have good oral communication skills, being comfortable speaking to people, of all ages and ranks.
Your posting will depend upon your developmental needs and the business areas we believe you would be most suited to following assessment.

You will receive an induction that will allow you to become familiar with the new working environment following which, you will work with your allocated team completing work packages and gathering evidence towards your employability scheme and degree requirements. You will meet regularly with your line manager and you will receive formal assessments of your work at scheduled periods during your placement.

The final week will allow you to build your portfolio of evidence, receive your final assessment and present the results of your work to senior officers.

You will be fully supported throughout by the Citizens in Policing Unit and you will be appointed a mentor outside of your line management arrangements as appropriate.

Salary: You will be paid at the level of a scale 1/2 police staff employee at a rate of £8.02 per hour. Payment will be by direct transfer into your bank account on the 27th day of the month.

Selection for shortlisting will be based upon the completion of an application form. Successful applicants will be invited to an assessment day on 10 March 2018 where there will be a group exercise and a panel assessment.

Selection for the panel assessment will be based on performance in the group exercise, so be prepared to be available all day, although if not selected for interview you will be released at lunchtime.
