Full Time

Applications are invited from substantive Constables to join the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire (BCH) Road Policing Unit, which is part of Joint Protective Services.  This process is open to officers currently serving within Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Police.  There are currently vacancies at both bases.

Please note: This advert is to fill current and future projected vacancies. Board passes will be for 12 months and officers will be recruited to vacancies in line with the BCH apportionment and resourcing principals. This means that offers will be made according to the greatest under-represented force, which does not necessarily mean that score order takes priority.

Road Policing officers provide a vital service across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire as part of the JPS Strategic Alliance and police a mix of rural and urban environments. With a combined population of over 2.5 million people, it is a particularly diverse and challenging environment for the Road Policing Team, who deal with over 80 fatal road traffic collisions per year.  Officers are expected to be self-motivated, working effectively within a team environment contributing towards the Road Policing Operational Plan.

The unit currently has two bases: Cambridgeshire Police Headquarters, Huntingdon and Stevenage Police Station, Hertfordshire. The team provides 24-hour cover across the three counties, working towards road safety objectives to make people safe on our roads.

The successful candidates will develop skills in a vital area of specialist policing including the Roads Policing Traffic Law Course, Advanced Driver Training, Tactical Pursuit and Containment (TPAC) and to become a Family Liaison Officer (FLO).

Applicants are required to have at least two years’ experience, have completed their probationary period and hold at least a response driving permit. I.t is a role requirement that all RPU officers attend and pass an advanced driving course with a maximum of two courses.

As well as entry requirements, interested applicants should provide evidence against the four competencies below:

  • We are Collaborative
  • We Analyse Critically
  • We are Innovative and open minded
  • We Take ownership
  • Minimum Entry requirements

Please note that there is a word count limit of 250 words per section.

We welcome applications from officers who would like to work flexibly, for example job share applications would be considered.

Those applicants who are successful on the paper sift will then be required to attend an advanced driving assessment, prior to an interview board.

Any offer would be subject to satisfactory complaints and discipline checks, medical and vetting checks.

Road Policing expect a return on investment from successful candidates for this role of 36 months.

We are committed to improving diverse representation within the department, not only to ensure it is representative of our public, but also to improve its operational effectiveness within the communities’ we police.   BAME officers are invited to speak with Pc Shaz Ali and female officers are invited to speak with either Pc Claire Marland and Pc Anthea Heap. These RPU officers work at Huntingdon.

We are committed to ensuring that our recruitment processes are barrier-free and as inclusive as possible to everyone. If you would like us to do anything differently during the application process or for any further information, please contact Inspector Pete Scholes at Stevenage or Insp Richie Barker at Huntingdon.

All applicants must print off a copy of the BCH application approval form and pass this onto their line manager and head of department for sign off. As this is a PDF document this will need to be wet signed. Though we will accept an audit trail of emails from your line manager and Head of Department if this is not achievable. The completed approval form needs to be returned to the BCHCareers@herts.pnn.police.uk as close to the closing date as possible.

Application forms will not be progressed to the shortlisting stage until the Recruitment Team has received a completed approval form.

This force is a Disability Confident employer.
